In 2021, shipments abroad of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -29.8% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 159% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, lithium battery exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +17.2%. At the same time, Bahrain (+30.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +30.0% from 2012-2021. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.

In 2021, overseas purchases of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -5.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium battery imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together constituting a 13% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +27.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 5.6% share.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
