Mdf Market Size in Japan

The Japanese MDF market expanded notably to $X in 2021, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 9.8%. Consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

China (X cubic meters), Vietnam (X cubic meters) and Indonesia (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from Japan, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to China ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of MDF decreased by -0.8% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, imports showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, MDF imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 8.2%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

New Zealand (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters) and Indonesia (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of MDF imports to Japan, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +24.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest MDF suppliers to Japan, with a combined 84% share of total imports. Indonesia, South Korea and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Australia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
