Sugar Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican sugar market amounted to less than $X in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.

Brazil represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 39% of total exports. India (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Australia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Cuba (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sugar. At the same time, India (+15.0%), Zambia (+12.1%), Swaziland (+10.0%), Australia (+5.6%), Germany (+5.3%) and Mexico (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guatemala (-2.0%), France (-3.0%), Cuba (-6.5%) and Thailand (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+11 p.p.), Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) and Australia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Brazil and Thailand saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sugar supplying countries from Puerto Rico were Brazil ($X), India ($X) and Cuba ($X), together comprising 53% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +18.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Puerto Rico amounted to less than $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Cuba ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cuba (+16.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), followed by Algeria (X tons), Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons) were the key importers of sugar, together comprising 41% of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United States (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar into Puerto Rico, comprising 19% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 9% share of global imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia amounted to +14.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+10.7% per year) and Malaysia (+12.9% per year).

The import price in Puerto Rico stood at less than $X per ton in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
