Mdf Exports

Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2021, approx. X cubic meters of MDF were exported from Russia; growing by 13% against 2020 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, MDF exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan (X cubic meters), Kazakhstan (X cubic meters) and Belarus (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from Russia, with a combined 54% share of total exports. Belgium, Romania, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, the UK, Ukraine, Germany, Lithuania and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In 2021, the average MDF export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, overseas purchases of MDF increased by 15% to X cubic meters, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of MDF to Russia, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, MDF imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X cubic meters), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belarus totaled +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-11.5% per year) and China (-17.5% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Germany ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest MDF suppliers to Russia, together comprising 74% of total imports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +14.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average MDF import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Belarus ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
