Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, freshwater fish exports rose modestly to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Tanzania (X tons) represented the major exporter of freshwater fish, constituting X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - each finished at a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest freshwater fish supplying countries in SADC were Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), together comprising X% of total exports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of freshwater fish increased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, imports posted a temperate increase. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, freshwater fish imports soared to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Lesotho was the major importer of freshwater fish in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an X% share, followed by Tanzania (X%), Mozambique (X%) and Zambia (X%). Angola (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Lesotho increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Mozambique (X%), Angola (X%), Tanzania (X%) and Zimbabwe (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, South Africa (X%) and Zambia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lesotho (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.), Angola (X p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X p.p.) and Zimbabwe (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Zambia (X p.p.) and South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Lesotho ($X), Zambia ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. Mozambique, Tanzania, Angola, Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, freshwater fish import price decreased by X% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
