Garlic Market Size in SADC

In 2023, the SADC garlic market increased by X% to $X for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in Tanzania stood at X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Madagascar (X% per year) and Malawi (X% per year).

The average garlic yield reached X tons per ha in 2023, approximately equating 2022 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of the garlic yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In value terms, garlic exports expanded notably to $X in 2023. In general, exports showed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2023, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of garlic, committing X% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Madagascar (X%). Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Malawi (X%), Tanzania (X%) and Madagascar (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. In 2023, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of garlic, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports rose modestly to $X in 2023. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Mozambique (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importers of garlic, together constituting X% of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Comoros (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
