Salt Market Size in SADC

After two years of growth, the SADC salt market decreased by X% to $X in 2023. The total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. Exports by Country

Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2023, imports of salt and pure sodium chloride in SADC contracted to X tons, with a decrease of X% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.

In value terms, salt imports declined to $X in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of salt and pure sodium chloride, generating X% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Malawi (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Seychelles (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of salt and pure sodium chloride.
