In 2022, global exports of leather shrank to X square meters, falling by X% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the largest exporter of leather in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X square meters, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Italy (X square meters) and the United States (X square meters), together committing a X% share of total exports. Paraguay (X square meters), Thailand (X square meters), Uruguay (X square meters), New Zealand (X square meters), China (X square meters), Australia (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters), India (X square meters) and Turkey (X square meters) took a minor share of total exports.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of leather. At the same time, Uruguay (X%), China (X%), Thailand (X%) and Paraguay (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Australia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (X%), Vietnam (X%), New Zealand (X%), Italy (X%), South Africa (X%), India (X%) and the United States (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (X p.p.), Paraguay (X p.p.), Uruguay (X p.p.), China (X p.p.) and Thailand (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest leather supplier worldwide, comprising X% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an X% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy stood at X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (X% per year) and China (X% per year).

The average leather export price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while Paraguay ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
