Acyclic Hydrocarbons Prices in the United States

U.S. Acyclic Hydrocarbons Export Price in December 2021

In December 2021, the acyclic hydrocarbons price amounted to $423 per ton (FOB, US), surging by 2.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2021 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $496 per ton. From October 2021 to December 2021, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($1,717 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($181 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+12.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Acyclic Hydrocarbons Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons ($1,485 per ton), while the average price for exports of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons ($369 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: butene and isomers thereof (+2.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Acyclic Hydrocarbons Exports

In December 2021, exports of acyclic hydrocarbons from the United States reduced to 1M tons, which is down by -13.3% against November 2021. In general, total exports indicated perceptible growth from January 2021 to December 2021: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the last eleven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, exports decreased by -19.8% against October 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2021 when exports increased by 55% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.3M tons. From November 2021 to December 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, acyclic hydrocarbons exports contracted to $436M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from January 2021 to December 2021: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last eleven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, exports decreased by -29.0% against October 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2021 when exports increased by 49% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $613M. From November 2021 to December 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

U.S. Acyclic Hydrocarbons Exports by Type

Saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (880K tons) was the largest type of acyclic hydrocarbons exported from the United States, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exceeded the volume of the second product type, ethylene (80K tons), more than tenfold. Unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons (48K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons stood at +3.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: ethylene (+0.3% per month) and unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons (-1.4% per month).

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons ($325M) remains the largest type of acyclic hydrocarbons exported from the United States, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by ethylene ($73M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons, with a 14% share.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons totaled +5.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: ethylene (+1.3% per month) and unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons (+1.2% per month).

U.S. Acyclic Hydrocarbons Exports by Country

China (261K tons), Canada (153K tons) and Belgium (103K tons) were the main destinations of acyclic hydrocarbons exports from the United States, with a combined 50% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Sweden, India, Norway, the UK, Mexico and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 43%.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +130.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($83M), China ($77M) and Canada ($73M) constituted the largest markets for acyclic hydrocarbons exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports. India, Mexico, the UK, Norway, Sweden and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +119.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
