In value terms, articles of peat production shrank to $62.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $66.4B in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports By Country

In 2022, Spain (5.8K tons), distantly followed by the United States (3.3K tons), Germany (2.6K tons), the Czech Republic (1.7K tons) and Lithuania (1K tons) were the major importers of articles of peat, together making up 69% of total imports. Canada (813 tons), Denmark (769 tons), Russia (627 tons), Austria (334 tons) and the UK (331 tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +38.4%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($8,703 per ton), while the Czech Republic ($421 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, shipments abroad of articles of peat increased by 51% to 49K tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, articles of peat exports surged to $62M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +119.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

Latvia was the key exporter of articles of peat in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at 23K tons, which was near 46% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Sweden (9.6K tons), the Czech Republic (2.8K tons), Canada (2.5K tons), the Netherlands (2.3K tons) and Poland (2.2K tons), together achieving a 40% share of total exports. Denmark (1.5K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of peat exports, with a CAGR of +86.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sweden (+80.4%), the Netherlands (+47.6%) and Poland (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Denmark (-1.5%) and the Czech Republic (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Latvia (+46 p.p.), Sweden (+20 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Denmark, Canada and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -3%, -3.6% and -8.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest articles of peat supplying countries worldwide were Canada ($9.5M), Denmark ($7M) and the Netherlands ($6.3M), together comprising 37% of global exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +47.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average articles of peat export price stood at $1,264 per ton in 2022, dropping by -11.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $2,265 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($4,558 per ton), while Latvia ($97 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
