Industrial Production of Ammonium Nitrate

Ammonium nitrate is an important chemical compound used in the fertilizers and explosives industry. It is produced industrially through the reaction of ammonia and nitric acid, which is known as the Ostwald process.

The Ostwald process involves three main steps: catalytic oxidation of ammonia, absorption of the produced nitric oxide, and oxidation of the absorbed nitric oxide to produce nitrogen dioxide. The nitrogen dioxide is then reacted with the remaining unabsorbed nitric oxide to produce nitric acid. Finally, ammonia is reacted with nitric acid to produce ammonium nitrate.

The first step of the Ostwald process involves the catalytic oxidation of ammonia in the presence of oxygen and a platinum-rhodium catalyst, which converts ammonia into nitric oxide and water. The nitric oxide is then absorbed by water to form nitric acid.

In the second step of the process, the produced nitric oxide is absorbed by water to form nitric acid. The absorption process can be carried out in a tower packed with glass beads, which provides a large surface area for the absorption to occur.

In the final step of the process, the absorbed nitric oxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by reacting it with air. This reaction takes place in a reactor, where the gases are fed through a burner to increase the temperature and promote the reaction.

The nitrogen dioxide is then reacted with unabsorbed nitric oxide to produce nitric acid, which is then reacted with ammonia to produce ammonium nitrate. The reaction is exothermic and produces a lot of heat, which must be removed through a cooling system.

The resulting ammonium nitrate solution is then concentrated by evaporation and is then allowed to crystallize. The crystals are then separated from the remaining liquid and are dried to produce solid ammonium nitrate.
