Chestnut Production in Hungary - 2022
In 2022, approx. 238 tons of chestnuts were produced in Hungary; picking up by 5.6% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 33%. Chestnut production peaked at 250 tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure. Chestnut output in Hungary indicated a buoyant expansion, which was largely conditioned by a resilient expansion of the harvested area and a noticeable increase in yield figures.
In value terms, chestnut production surged to $1.4M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 279% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $1.8M. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Chestnut Harvested Area in Hungary - 2022
In 2022, the harvested area of chestnuts in Hungary rose remarkably to 320 ha, surging by 6.7% on 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 31%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of 340 ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the chestnut harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of chestnuts in Hungary declined slightly to 742 kg per ha, approximately mirroring 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 28%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of 769 kg per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average chestnut yield remained at a lower figure.
