Whey Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average whey export price amounted to $785 per ton, reducing by -9.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,003 per ton. From December 2022 to August 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($3,376 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($278 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Whey Price in Italy (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average whey import price amounted to $915 per ton, with a decrease of -8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,797 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,237 per ton), while the price for Greece ($93 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whey Exports in Italy
For the third consecutive year, Italy recorded decline in overseas shipments of whey, which decreased by -23.8% to 230K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The smallest decline of -3% was in 2021.
In value terms, whey exports fell modestly to $251M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $260M, and then fell in the following year.

Whey Imports in Italy
For the fourth year in a row, Italy recorded growth in supplies from abroad of whey, which increased by 14% to 95K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, whey imports stood at $87M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
