Rum Market Size in Western Africa

The West African rum market dropped to $X in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2022, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, rum exports fell to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Ghana (X litres) was the main exporter of rum, constituting X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), making up a X% share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rum exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023.

Ghana, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

In 2023, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per litre, picking up by X% against the previous year. Imports in Western Africa

In 2023, the amount of rum imported in Western Africa shrank sharply to X litres, which is down by X% on 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Ghana dominates imports structure, reaching X litres, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Nigeria (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X litres). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X litres), Togo (X litres), Cabo Verde (X litres), Niger (X litres) and Liberia (X litres) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Niger (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%) and Liberia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (X%), Cabo Verde (X%) and Burkina Faso (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) and Niger (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cabo Verde, Togo, Nigeria and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by X%, X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rum in Western Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an X% share.
