In 2023, the global graphite market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, graphite production dropped to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production decreased by X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

In 2023, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports declined dramatically to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporter of graphite (natural) in the world, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Mozambique (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Madagascar (X%). The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Norway (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Canada (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphite exports from China stood at X%. At the same time, Mozambique (X%), Tanzania (X%), Madagascar (X%), Belgium (X%), the Netherlands (X%) and Germany (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Norway and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (X%) and Canada (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (X p.p.), Madagascar (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.) and the Netherlands (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Canada, Brazil and China saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest graphite supplier worldwide, comprising X% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a X% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

In China, graphite exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (X% per year) and Germany (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (X%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of graphite (natural), when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2022, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, graphite imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of graphite (natural), namely China, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, India and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, together comprising X% of global imports. China, Poland, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Poland, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the average graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Global import price peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
